Emissions inventory and offsetting for events

The emissions inventory of an event covers every relevant source: attendee travel (air, ground, transfers), venue energy use (grid electricity and generators), catering (carbon footprint by type of meal), waste generated, setup and teardown materials, and supplier logistics.

We use GHG Protocol emission factors and recognized databases (DEFRA, ecoinvent) to calculate the total footprint of the event in tCO₂e. The result is auditable and follows the same methodology as corporate inventories.

Offsetting is done with REDD+ carbon credits from forest conservation projects in the Amazon, supplied by Carbonext. Each credit represents one tonne of CO₂ equivalent that was not emitted because deforestation was prevented.

The projects are certified to international standards (VCS/Verra) and verified by independent audit. Mangue Tech takes care of the whole operation: calculating the volume needed, buying the credits and retiring them in the official registry.

The event receives a carbon offset certificate detailing the emissions measured, the volume of credits retired and the REDD+ projects used. The certificate can be presented during the event itself, used in corporate communications and included in sustainability reports.

The timeline of the process, from the inventory to the offsetting and the issuing of the certificate, is designed case by case, according to the size of the event, the number of sources to collect and the time left until it opens.
