The framework
What it is, and why it matters.
The GHG Protocol is the most widely used global standard for measuring and managing greenhouse gas emissions. Published by WRI and WBCSD, it sets the rules for classifying emissions into scopes 1 (direct), 2 (purchased energy) and 3 (value chain).
The Corporate Standard sets the accounting principles: relevance, completeness, consistency, transparency and accuracy. The Scope 2 Guidance details the location-based and market-based methods. The Scope 3 Standard covers the 15 categories of indirect emissions.
In Brazil, the GHG Protocol is the basis of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program and will be a mandatory reference for companies above 10,000 tCO₂e/year under the Brazilian Emissions Trading System (SBCE).
